Renowned Ugandan music producer Magic Washington has called out local artistes for celebrating what he terms as “bare-minimum success,” challenging them to aim higher and build lasting brands beyond material possessions.
Speaking in radio interview Radio, Washington who has been a pillar in Uganda’s music industry for over two decades expressed disappointment in the trend of musicians celebrating the acquisition of cars and houses as major milestones.
“While owning a car or house is good, it shouldn’t make you feel like you’ve made it,” he said. “Those are basic achievements. We should be celebrating real milestones like launching clothing lines, perfume lines, shoe companies, or even headphones.”
Washington emphasized that true success in the entertainment industry lies in creating sustainable business ventures and cultural influence, not just accumulating personal property.
His candid remarks have since sparked conversations across social media and within the music fraternity, with many questioning the standards by which success is currently measured in Uganda’s entertainment scene.
Known for shaping the sound of some of the country’s biggest hits, Washington’s words carry weight and his challenge may well inspire a shift in mindset among rising and established artists alike.
