MOVIE REVIEW: Royal Treatment

Cast: Laura Marano, Mena Massoud, Cameron Rhodes, Chelsie Preston Crayford, Grace Bentley-Tsibuah

Director: Rick Jacobson

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Duration: 97 Minutes

Now streaming on Netflix

Izzy (Marano), a kind hairdresser from the Bronx makes the acquaintance of Thomas (Massoud), prince of Lavania and the two don’t get off to a good start. However, they get a chance for a more friendly interaction when Izzy and her best friends/workmates, Destiny (Preston) and Lola (Bentley-Tsibuah) are flown to Lavania as stylists for Thomas’ wedding. During this visit, Izzy has an influence on Thomas, which makes him more sensitive to his community’s needs. That is the storyline of The Royal Treatment in a nutshell.

The movie is as rom-commy as rom-coms get, without being a put off. It is definitely not a new story since we have seen the unthoughtful guy meets girl who causes him to change his ways in the storyline before. However, Netflix rom-coms are not guaranteed to be heartwarming, which The Royal Treatment is not. Marano, who we have seen in another Netflix movie, The Perfect Date, and Massoud from Aladdin, have good chemistry and hit the endearing meter. Add the quirky best friends, Destiny and Lola, and the movie does well cast-wise. Another thing I loved about this movie is that it didn’t create the stereotypical beef between Izzy and Thomas’ fiancee.

A good watch if you are looking for a feel-good movie.
