Redundancy at home, lack of money or food, lack of communication, mistrust, sexual dissatisfaction, and disputes over money were some of the causes registered to have been the major causes of domestic violence during the lockdown. Even though the lockdown was lifted, the impact still lives on and has got people living in chains and pain.

Through ‘Namukwakula The Resentment’ a theater play slated for March 10, at theater Labonita, Dramatist Shamim Mayanja, the brain behind the production, says it is targeting Domestic Violence.

She explained that ‘Namukwakula’ will address the continued rise in domestic violence cases citing, theatricals are the best preachers of good in society.

“As domestic violence cases continue to rise, ‘Namukwakula’ can help the government and religious leaders in impacting change in society. I want people to understand that sometimes drama can inspire change more than a counselor can do,” she said

She explains that there are higher chances of people learning from theatre because theatricals educate and at the same time give a lighter side of the situation.

“After the play, you will find that 5% of the people have immediately embraced change while others will go home thinking about it. if we become consistent with such kinds of shows, people in society will know and humorously understand their rights,” she explained.

‘Namukwakula The Resentment’ will be at an entry fee of Shs 50,000, and after the official premiere, Shamim says she will take it to different communities for six months before it will be shown at the Uganda National Theatre.
