Bobi Wine responds to critics as he graduates from Law School

Bobi Wine

“In August 2016, after much procrastination, I attended my first lecture in Law School at the International University of East Africa. Seven years later, I have graduated with a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Cavendish University,” reads part of a long post Bobi Wine shared on his Facebook page this morning, announcing his highly anticipated graduation.

The musician-turned-politician, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has long been known as a graduate of Music, Dance, and Drama from Makerere University. Now, he adds a law degree to his academic achievements. Bobi Wine revealed that the idea of attending law school was conceived 20 years ago during a conversation with fellow artist and lawyer Sylver Kyagulanyi while they were still at the MDD department at Makerere.

Bobi Wine expressed gratitude to several people who supported and encouraged him throughout his journey, including friends, lecturers, his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi, and David Lewis Rubongoya. Rubongoya, who was once his lecturer, advised him to transfer from the International University of East Africa, which at the time was not fully accredited to teach law, to Cavendish University, which was already accredited.

Bobi Wine disclosed that he was supposed to graduate last year, having completed all other requirements for the degree. However, he missed a few lectures in one course unit, which delayed his graduation. “I wasn’t allowed to graduate but instead subjected to another semester of re-attendance for that course unit. I took the new challenge with grace and ended up waiting for another full year to graduate. Many of my classmates graduated last year and the years before,” he explained.

He also addressed the actions of individuals who petitioned and challenged his graduation upon learning of his impending accomplishment. This move led officials from the National Council for Higher Education to scrutinize his academic records. “Their move prompted officials from the National Council for Higher Education to go to my University and demand every document regarding my studies, including my application form, admission forms, all class attendance records, written exams, coursework of all the years, and my tuition payment records,” he stated.

Bobi Wine clarified that it was only after a thorough and intense investigation that he was cleared to graduate. “It is after a very detailed and intense investigation that I was cleared to graduate today,” he concluded.

This graduation marks another milestone in Bobi Wine’s diverse career, further solidifying his commitment to personal growth and public service.
