Kagayi transforms Ugandan poetry, inspiring teen talent

Kagayi Ngobi is widely heralded as one of Ugandan poetry’s leading lights.

As a performer, he effortlessly balances artistic vision, technical virtuosity and a keen sense of timing to set fire to the stage, as it were, with the kind of pyrotechnics which shine through with personality and character.

As a writer of poetry, the quality of his written material infuses his delivery on stage with a sense of what makes something, anything, poetic.

His diction and facility for conjuring up words and coining phrases, a linguistic process known as neologism, is revolutionary.

This dual ability, performing and writing, has turned him into a foundational figure in the genre of not just Ugandan poetry but regional verse.

One would think that would be more than enough of a contribution to the poetry art form.

However, Kagayi is not one to rest on his laurels. He is also a nurturer of poetic talent across several generations.

His poetry outfit called Kitara Nation is responsible for shaping the earliest incarnations of spoken word artistry in Uganda.
