Is Kampala losing its spark in East Africa?

As you read this, Nigerian artiste Burna Boy will be taking the stage in Nairobi, Kenya later today. This is just days after Tanzania, Zanzibar was buzzing with the best of African artistes such as Diamond Platnumz, King Promise, Bien, Harmonize, Zuchu, Rema and Joshua Baraka, who convened on the island for the Trace Awards, which were held on Wednesday night.

And of course, we cannot forget that a few days before all this, the spotlight was on Kigali where John Legend, an EGOT winner was performing.

In fact, for the past years, Kigali has mastered the art of attracting the region to themselves thanks to unique curation of art, conferences and sports events that invite the continent to the country.

From comedian Dave Chappelle to rapper Kendrick Lamar performing in Kigali to their BK Arena to basketball tournaments, Kigali may have become one of the busiest African cities of late.

With Uganda being known as East Africa’s party capital over the years, the question was whether activities in the neighbourhood were threatening that position, especially after Kenyan party goers through Nyege Nyege had shown us that there was nothing wrong with using your passport to follow a party across the borders.

However, even when East Africa is finally getting busy with highly billed international artistes, the belief is that this will not affect Uganda’s party culture and the support for local events.

While in an exchange on social media, musician and music curator, Tshaka Mayanja noted that Ugandans are some of the biggest supporters of local artistes in Africa; he says many artistes in Uganda can host concerts even with little to offer but the public is willing to show up for them.
