Why Rabadaba gave up on Hip Hop

Rabadabba

Rabadaba

Did you know that Uganda’s ragga king, Rabadaba, almost became a hip-hop legend? Before his dancehall anthems like Mukyamu and Oli Mubi catapulted him to stardom, Rabadaba was once a promising rapper, signed to the iconic Baboon Forest Entertainment under the mentorship of none other than rap legend GNL Zamba.

But here’s the juicy twist: Rabadaba walked away from rap because of GNL. It all went down during a late-night drive near Speke Hotel, where the two were having a deep conversation about their musical paths. In a moment of raw honesty, Rabadaba dropped the bombshell: “Bro, there’s no space for two kings. You own rap… I’m taking dancehall!”

And, in an unexpected turn of events, GNL himself admits that Rabadaba would have smoked most of today’s rappers if he ever returned to the genre. With GNL claiming that hip-hop is now “diluted” (his words, not ours), could Rabadaba still dominate the rap scene if he decided to return?

It’s a question many fans have been asking—what if Rabadaba had stayed in the rap game? Could he have changed the course of Ugandan hip-hop history? While we’ll never know for sure, one thing’s certain: Rabadaba’s decision to shift to dancehall was a defining moment in his career, and it’s still a topic of conversation today.
