How it went down at the 1st edition of Luo Festival

In a bid to celebrate and embrace the vibrant spirit of Luo culture, and lifestyle with drum beats, music, dance, poems, and traditional food and drinks, the first edition of the Luo cultural and lifestyle festival happened on Sunday at Hilltop Naguru.

The event organized by Lacito Enterprise, a company specialising in Events Tourism Management with a focal on both local and international clients showcased the unique culture of the Luo people including their music and dance, food, art and craft, children’s activities like bouncing castle, face painting and the tourist destinations in locations where the Luo are located like waterfalls such as the Aruu falls, heritage sites like the Gipiri and Labongo site, wildlife, Hots springs, Rivers, Lakes,  the National game/reserve parks, and many more.

Speaking about the event, Ms. Grace Oloya, the CEO of Lacito enterprises said that the reason why they started the festival is because many people no longer identify with the Luo culture.

“Ever since the war, several people have not gone back to their indigenous homes, they don’t know their cultures including myself because I struggle with the language so that is the reason why I started this. I also started it to encourage people to go visit the tourism sites in their home areas to promote tourism and to bring different cultures including the Acholi, Kumam, Alur, Japadhola, and Langis together,” she said.

Ms Oloya also added that the Festival is going to be an annual event, with additional build-up events in the different regions where the Luo live (Pakwach, Tororo, Gulu, Kitgum, Lira, etc.) with a final central event in Kampala.

The event partnered with individuals and companies including the Uganda Tourism Board, Explore Acholi Land, Cloud Chore abroad, and locals to plan and execute this very prestigious cultural and lifestyle event.
