John Legend unites East Africa

The first two editions of Move Afrika have been some sort of a unifying factor of the East African region. At first, when Kendrick Lamar headlined the concert in 2023, music lovers travelled from Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and Uganda among others to see his show and he did not disappoint.

This brotherhood among people from different countries was still felt when the second edition of Move Afrika concert took place in Kigali on Friday.

This year’s edition was headlined by American RnB singer and songwriter John Legend; unlike the first edition which was co-hosted by Azziad Nassenya and brought performers such as Zuchu from Tanzania, Ariel Wayz, DJ Toxxyk and Bruce Melody from Rwanda, this had only one co-headliner – Bwiza from Rwanda.

The artiste has been making waves in Rwanda with songs such as Ahazaza, Best Friend, Ready and her latest Itwari.

Between interludes, DJ Toxxyk took the wheels of steel to keep the audience engaged, the event had neither a presenter nor host, they had an announcer who never showed face for the entire evening.

So, what made this event standout? The swiftness.

In Kampala, the venue opens at 2pm or 3pm, most people arrive at 5pm, only for the MC and later the first performer to hit the stage at 9:30pm.

This event started at 8:30pm and by 10:55pm, John Legend had left the stage. By 11:30pm, workers had finished cleaning the Arena. Just like that.
