Several social media users have taken to online to slam the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, after he called on the government to ban video sharing platform TikTok.
According to Sheikh Mubajje, the platform is being misused by many people who allegedly share content aimed at causing disunity among citizens.
Speaking during Idd-ul-Fitr prayers at Old Kampala mosque on Sunday, Sheikh Mubajje described Tik Tok as a useless platform for idlers, content seekers, and those witch-hunting others for different intentions and that it may spark violence any time.
“TikTok has become a problem, and I think the time will come when it will erupt into violence. When we had Facebook, the government of Uganda closed it, but I think TikTok is worse than Facebook. I think TikTok is not being regulated,” Sheikh Mubajje said.
His call has left tpngues wagging, with many TikTokers telling of Mubajje, whom they accuse of being silent in the face of injustice against innocent Ugandans.
“How come he’s never said anything against government operatives who have been abusing their mandating and subjecting Uganda to all sorts of injustice,” one of the TikTokers asked.
Another wondered why Sheikh Mubajje, whose term of office as Mufti was recently controversially extended, has never said anything against enforced security brutality, disappearances and abductions of citizens over their political beliefs.
“What kind of religious leader is he!” he wondered.
The Chinese app is widely used by the youth, who comprise almost 80 per cent of 46 million Ugandans in the country.
