Last weekend, three Nigerian movie legends graced Uganda for the third edition of the prestigious iKon Awards, held at Kampala’s Serena Hotel. The star-studded event saw renowned actors Ramsey Nouah, Kanayo O. Kanayo, and Patience Ozokwor, the latter of whom was particularly celebrated for her immense contributions to African cinema. Kanayo O. Kanayo and Patience Ozokwor were honored with the African iKon Awards, cementing their place as icons in the entertainment industry.

However, it was Ugandan musician Eddy Kenzo’s heartfelt and humorous message to Ozokwor that captured the most attention. As he handed over her award, Kenzo shared a candid and unexpected remark that left the audience both surprised and amused.

“We used to hate you while growing up,” Kenzo confessed into the microphone, causing a wave of laughter in the room. “But after meeting you today, I see you are a sweet woman. Welcome to Uganda.”

Ozokwor, known for her iconic roles as the wicked mother, mother-in-law, or wife in many Nollywood films, simply smiled and gracefully accepted the comment. It’s clear that Kenzo’s statement stemmed from the powerful, often villainous characters Ozokwor portrayed on screen, which left a lasting impression on many viewers during their childhood.

Despite the playful nature of Kenzo’s remark, his words also reflected the power of Ozokwor’s performances and the strong emotional connections she forged with her audience over the years.
