Afrigo Band steals the show as Absa Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament ends

Afrigo band on performing

What began with birdies and bogeys ended in boogie as the 7th edition of the Absa Bank Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament wrapped up with timeless music and spirited celebration at the Uganda Golf Club, Kitante.

While golfing excellence played out over three competitive days—with record-breaking swings from stars like Joseph Cwinyaai and Peace Kabasweka—Saturday night’s 19th Hole dinner proved the ultimate highlight as Afrigo Band lit up the night with a soul-stirring performance that had guests swinging in a different style.

The legendary band rolled back the years with classics like Obangaina, Maria, and Nantongo, triggering a wave of nostalgia that turned the clubhouse into a jubilant dancefloor. With newly re-elected Club Captain Paul Charles Rukundo ringing the symbolic Captain’s Bell, the tournament shifted from fierce competition to full-blown festivity.

It wasn’t just about the music—Absa Bank, now seven years strong as the tournament’s title sponsor, injected UGX 179 million into this year’s edition. “This event is about more than just golf,” said Absa MD David Wandera. “It’s about nurturing talent and building moments that bring our community together. Today’s prizes and this party are our way of honouring that.”

And honor they did. From Deo Akope’s 11-under-par victory among the pros to Peace Kabasweka’s return to the ladies’ amateur summit, accolades were celebrated with wine, applause, and rhythm.

As Afrigo’s legendary melodies floated into the Kampala night and golfers traded clubs for cocktails, the 2025 Captain’s Bell proved once again that the spirit of the game doesn’t end on the 18th green—it simply shifts to the dancefloor.

With Absa Bank standing firm behind the tournament’s growth, and Rukundo steering another term as Club Captain, the Captain’s Bell is no longer just a golf event—it’s a cultural moment, where Uganda’s finest golf meets its finest groove.
